I'm digg'n that front axle! it'll never get hung up on anything!

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on September 09, 2011, 05:30:10 PM
you mean rear axle.

This may take awhile to feed enough money into.  So, I could use some side work!

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: penski61 on September 09, 2011, 07:13:57 PM
i think he was referring to the invisible front axle that would never hit anything haha

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: zachbiz on September 09, 2011, 07:19:46 PM
I think steeevo was talking about the lack of the front axle. And this looks awesome dude but if you are going from an engine and transmission and tires, why not just go with something like a complete chevy small block? just saying.

Also, if you still want that axle, you can pretty much come get it any time. I think I'm gonna go with Chevy leaf springs. Because 1, they are a tad bit longer and will move my wheel base back a tad, clearing the body and slider and 2, because i need them before i drive out to payson with aaron and to drive down to phoenix for my flight.

Or the engine is in the rear.

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: SteeevO on September 10, 2011, 04:52:40 PM
yeah you're right.. all the clues went right over everyones head.

It's going to actually be a rear engine.

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: BlackX on September 12, 2011, 06:41:15 AM
No big clues. I just know he did that with the last one so I put 2 and 2 together.

Kenny why do you do this anyway?  Is it a weight centering thing or something else?

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on September 12, 2011, 09:59:56 AM
Just looking at it like that it seems it should be going that way.  Better visibility, move room for pedals, no exhaust to route, and with flipped axles I have instant high pinions.  The only disadvantages may be weight bias and the extra cost of making a center drop front axle and offset rear.

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: zachbiz on September 12, 2011, 10:46:08 AM
i mean its badass by any measure, but going through the trouble of an offset rear with a centered front seems like too much hassle for pedal clearance...

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on September 12, 2011, 02:06:55 PM
You may be right.  Biggest thing is what the cage will look like.  It'll be nice to keep the front end low.  But, it'd also be nice to use your old H233 for the rear.

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: zachbiz on September 12, 2011, 02:16:09 PM
speaking of which, even if you dont use it on this project, come get it, i would hate to see it go to waste.

also i fixed my springs, I just threw the extra springs under a 52" pack under my stock upper leaf and it flattened it out and stiffened everything up.

If you guys need a middle man I can pick it up at Zachs in SD.  I'll be seeing Kenny in a couple weeks and can deliver it.

Yup.  I wanted to do a 9" with 60 outers, but Zach was kind enough to donate his old axle.  Since I have the Waggy outers already I figure this would be worth a try.

Just noticed the now front pumpkin is upside down.  Is that going to cause any oil starvation problems on the pinion/bearings?  I can't remember if there's a slinger in there.

Title: Re: My Buggy!

I need to research some more on what mods to do for pinion oiling.  I'm not even sure if the rear engine KOH buggies run flipped axles or reversed rotation motors?

Are you going to have enough range of motion on those u-joints with the drive shaft being so short?

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: zachbiz on November 05, 2011, 10:24:49 PM
if its level at ride height i think he will. looks good kenny.

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: Bobby B. on November 06, 2011, 12:52:35 PM
The problem wouldn't be when level and at ride height, it would be when it's drooping out in travel.  A 1310 u-joint, which that is, can only handle so much arc before binding and with such a short shaft it looks like it'll bind up fairly early.

Does it bind Kenny or will it work for you in your range of motion?

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on November 06, 2011, 03:18:35 PM
I'm running 16" airshocks and the driveshaft is perfectly inline with 4" uptravel.  I didn't do the math but my guess it will bind at full droop.  I'll check it when I get the lower link done.  But, I planned on using a center strap or suckdown with the airshocks anyway.  It'll work out nicely with the center drop diff!

4.85's? why so high?

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on November 30, 2011, 10:45:52 PM
I'm running the H233b up front.  It already has 4.9's.  6.5's would be nice, though.  I want a lower crawl ratio but I don't want to spend 3g's on an atlas only to get 5to1.  It would be cheaper to go to a 9" front and run 6.5's, which would put me at about the same crawl ratio as a 5to1 atlas.  And, I don't want to run the NFW double since my DS is already so short.  I'll just run what I got for now.

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: Bobby B. on December 01, 2011, 04:14:04 PM
I thought you already had a case with crawlers in it, or did that go away in the other buggy?

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on December 02, 2011, 10:36:58 AM
I bought my old Tx10 with the calmini gears in it back from Jason.  But, it still would be nice if I had a lower crawl ratio.  If I had 6.5's in the diffs or 5.4 in the t-case that would put me around 100-1 total crawl ratio.  Now, I have 74-1.

Close to $1000.   Almost 300 feet.  It's a mix of 1.5" and 1" .120 DOM

What do you have left to do to finish?

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on February 18, 2012, 10:37:00 AM
Too much!  Exhaust, brake lines, throttle pedel, fuel and coolant reservoirs, wiring & switch panel, skid plates, and I want to build a truss for the front axle.

Finally get to work on it again!  Here's one way to get rid of that cheesy rubber intake tube:

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: zachbiz on April 04, 2012, 12:29:34 AM
how did you do that? I've been looking into it but can't seem to get rid of those vacuum hoses for the pcv system.

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on April 04, 2012, 03:12:13 PM
The only line I kept was the one for the Idle up valve.  I know it won't idle without it.  All the other lines aren't critical.  I hope it runs!

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: zachbiz on April 04, 2012, 03:20:04 PM
which ones the idle up? do you have before and after photos? I just put all my hoses back to how they were before.

Wow man this thing is looking good.

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on April 04, 2012, 04:13:17 PM
Thanks!

It's such an f'n cluster of hoses under the intake manifold.  I wouldn't know how to put it back if I tried.  Before pictures would have been smart. lol  I got rid of all those metal tubes and hoses and such.  You can see in the pic all that is left is the single hose running under the intake from the throttle body to the Idle up valve, which is bolted to the underside of the intake manifold towards the rear.

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: zachbiz on April 04, 2012, 04:27:38 PM
Yeah I know. Did that engine have a pcv system? Because I think that was my problem. I tried to plug all the right vacuum hoses but it still ran like it had an open vacuum and started burning oil. Sounded like a stroker so I put everything back. Have you fired it up yet?

Title: Re: My Buggy!
Post by: theking on April 06, 2012, 01:17:40 AM
Yeah, I don't know.  I hope to have it running soon.  I still need to make the exhaust and run the wiring.

Made some catch cans for the water and fuel:

Hey Kenny, talk to the guys at tough-light. I don't know what the main number is but call/text this guy. +1 (951) 704-3417. He's in temecula. If you tell him (Zach the Xterra guy in San Diego) referred you he might get you the same deal or at least a deal. I got my light bar for less than their price on their website. tough-light.com
