so what kinda of camping do we have up there to where we can have 7-10 rigs including my tow pig and trailer

Probably the yellow post sites in the Heartbar campground.  They are larger than those right near Big Bear lake and there are several next to each other so we can grab more than one.  It's first come first served and it's free.  To guarantee a spot someone would need to get up there on Friday by early afternoon.

so we would need someone there friday to camp saturday night? is it that bad up there

yeah someone should really go grab a few sites.
Don't forget you need Forrest adventure passes to camp at Yellow Post Sites. ($5 / Day at the ranger station)
Also, I've been looking on 'n off for BLM land that is closer to big bear. Maybe along 3N14 where we can camp wherever we want and still be close to the BB trail system.

As far as trails go, I was thinking Motino wash. but it's not really near anything else.
a Really Really GOOD  :D day would be Dishpan Springs -> Holcomb Creek -> John  Bull (backwards) -> Jacoby Cyn or Gold Mtn. -> 20 min road back to camp.

AND... With any kind of luck we can do it in under 24 Hours   ;D :cover:  :cover:  :cover:  :cover:

I might try and join you guys.

Heartbar would be the easiest to get a trailer/multiple rigs in, up past the horse trailer area, but then it's a bit of a drive to JB.  There is a big yellow post on the forest side above the village that would work, plus it's got shade.  Actually, depending on how many folks go, I can think of another one that's way shaded and could work with a trailer given some minor finagling.

Don't remember the numbers, but can check.  If I do go I could probably go up early and snag a spot, but won't know until next week.

If you're driving way out here let's take it to the Hammers.   It'll be more fun and camping wouldn't be a problem.  Jason will bring out his Jeep buggy, too

ill probably just stick with Big Bear , ill definatly come back out there sometime to run the hammers just want to get  a feel for the truck with the new setup

Title: Re: so-cal trail run August 28th

Do you need your tow vehicle while camping?  You could always leave that truck and trailer on a residential street near the trail entrance.

Title: Re: so-cal trail run August 28th
Post by: penski61 on August 10, 2011, 04:15:19 PM
id rather not leave the truck and trailer overnight some where , also probably gonna sleep in the back of the dodge

a few of the guys on thenewx may rent a cabin or house by the lake , so we may go in on that since it would be $50 a night per room for a 4bdr

I'm good with camping at the yellow post sites.

They are all very close to each other or we can get a paid site that will accommodate more people. it's like $20 per site and 2 vehicles and $5 per each additional vehicles... or something like that.

I'd really like to camp. I'd pitch in for the big camp site or just go to a yellow post.

In order, from closest trail to furthest of the 4 we mentioned in the planning of this trip are holcomb creek, john bull, gold mtn, dishpan springs.

for those that use google earth here is a quick scribble on a route we can take to wheel holcomb creek and john bull.
I'm up for wheeling whatever but here is an idea.. http://ruggedrocks.com/stuff/Aug-28-2011-Nissan-Run.kmz

for those that don't want to run john bull, you can continue east on 3N16 after holcomb creek to run gold mtn.
gold mtn is not part of my google earth scribble.

Title: Re: so-cal trail run August 28th
Post by: SteeevO on August 17, 2011, 04:24:13 PM
There are quite a few guys going up to just wheel for the day on sunday.
We haven't discussed a schedule yet, but I'm hoping we're on the trail by 8:30 or so.

Holcomb creek trail isn't very far at all from the camp ground so we'll probably just be leaving from there.

bobby, was that before or after the fires? were you on 33's with a locker?
a lot of trail maintenance has been done there. the gardens are good fun but not crazy.

some vids:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnaPQJztvcc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tro8kfmR7pI

also, this trip seems to be working out fairly well in terms of attendance..
and Rugged Rocks took it's first order on Aug. 27th 2006. which makes this trip dead on the 5th anniversary day. maybe we should do a big bear thing every year? ???

Title: Re: so-cal trail run August 28th
Post by: Bobby B. on August 18, 2011, 05:23:09 PM
After the fire, on a trail clean/eval run.  33s, but no lockers, and the work to adjust the water run hadn't been done yet so the middle garden was muddy.  It was challenging to say the least.  Haven't run it since it reopened.

Am having some front diff problems, so I'm on the fence for the run.  It's clunking really bad and the short stub axle actually pivots up and down some.  The crappy parts house cv with bad tolerances doesn't help the clunk either.  Bad enough to where it'll shift enough to cause an air leak in the diff collar.  I have the stuff to rebuild it but I just don't want to do it.  Sigh.

Title: Re: so-cal trail run August 28th

Depends what time we get up there... if we leave late on sat i was just thinking about eating in town or eating on the way up, doing something simple for b-fast in the morning and packing a lunch.

but if we get up there early then yeah maybe we should just pitch in or something.

FireWood.. please everyone bring a little bit of firewood... NO NAILS OR SCREWS!

Title: Re: so-cal trail run August 28th
Post by: penski61 on August 22, 2011, 10:05:10 PM
yeah i guess it depends on how far along Kenny is on friday , i was hoping to get up there around 3 or 4

also if i tow my truck up there , are there any staging area's for the trails since check out at the campsite is 11am

Title: Re: so-cal trail run August 28th
Post by: BlackX on August 22, 2011, 11:11:10 PM
Yeah that's not a problem.  Some of the graded roads are really wide and you can just leave it on the side.  Or worse case leave it in the parking lot at the discovery center for the day.

Title: Re: so-cal trail run August 28th
Post by: Bobby B. on August 22, 2011, 11:35:06 PM
Or worse case leave it in the parking lot at the discovery center for the day.

If not there, just down from that there's that boat launch area just down from it.  Lots of trucks and trailers there all day.

Also, you can ask permission over by the firestation at Fawnskin and leave it there.

this should be a good start for the fire , wood is dry and heavy so it looks like it will be a slow burn
