Title: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear & 5:1 Atlas
Post by: penski61 on June 26, 2011, 08:17:16 PM
well with the help of Kenny theking , in the end of august i should be 3 linked up front and 4 linked in the rear :)

since i have a tow rig and trailer now im taking advantage of the that and prepping the truck so that we should have the truck knocked out in 2 days possibly even one
cut out the old shock hoops up front and removed the shocks and lower shock mounts off the axle
cut out the stock mounting points for the transmission x-member and made up a new x-member
(http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z219/penski61/P6198944.jpg)
got a good chunk of work done today
cut out a stock crossmember in the back and added some cross braces to crossmembers i had already installed on the truck
got the shock towers mocked up then added a truss? to them and made it removeable so i can take the bed off if needed
need to fix the hole in the bed on the drivers side but other than that i think it came out good

Title: Re: 3 link front 4 link rear
Post by: penski61 on July 02, 2011, 08:52:33 PM
got the rear towers all tied in , then started on the front hoops
got the fender wells cut out so the hoops can fit in there then got the hoops all put together

i picked up some hoops from trail gear but they didnt quite work so i ended up cutting the ends off and sleeving them with some extra 2" i had
not sure how trail-gear does it but i couldnt even buy the material for less than they sale the hoops

looking good.

i talked to steve for a little bit the other day about spring rates. i'm running 300's over 250's up front with the collars adjusted down to ride on the 300's at ride height and it rides great. i'd consider something similar for the rear, maybe 250's over 200's.

my current rear setup is 200's with 100's, and its not that great, a little soft. i have the collars on the rear adjusted down to ride on the 200's and i'm not really benefitting from the dual rate because there is not much weight back there (relative to the overall balance of the truck). if i was going to fool around with my rear springs, i'd probably try a single 250, set the ride height, and call it good. i got a feeling that would be ideal since the rear isn't going to really benefit from a dual rate spring setup since you will likely run a center limiting strap.

Post by: penski61 on July 03, 2011, 02:20:05 PM
ill be running the same for the fronts 300/250

i was thinking 200/200 for the rear but may go the 250/200

how high are you setting your shock mounts at full stuff, what ride height/uptravel?  also, do you have a good pic of your steering?  what pitman, TRE, highsteer arms are you running?

I already made your axle bridge.  It looks like this one:

yea... i wasn't quite sure how the hoops are going to work out. with you guys pretty much splitting the work. ???

Title: Re: 3 link front 4 link rear
Post by: penski61 on July 04, 2011, 08:47:49 AM
front is set up for 6" up travel and rear at 7" up travel
ride height would be 27" front and 28" rear

stock pitman arm , chevy tre's on the tie rod and high angle tre on draglink and parts mike high steer arm with 1" spacer
if i need to change over to heims or something let me know
ill get some pics later today
yea... i wasn't quite sure how the hoops are going to work out. with you guys pretty much splitting the work. ???

curious why you wouldnt think they would work ? i set them for the up travel i wanted and set them so the mounts would be out of the way of the rear upper links and the bridge for the front upper not goin to get in the way of anything Kenny is gonna do

Kenny we may have to modify/notch that bridge for the axle vent and the arb air line/fittings

Title: Re: 3 link front 4 link rear
Post by: roastbeef on July 04, 2011, 05:09:20 PM
kenny would know better then i would, but i think the lower link length dominates where the shock hoops go.
the pinion is going to rotate a little differently with links than it does with leafs, and if the shocks aren't straight up and down, the mounting tabs are really going to eat at the mounts on the shock body when it flexes.
the steering setup is also going to dominate axle placement over the lower link mounts, and its going to be a little bit different then a leaf setup as well, because its so crucial for the drag link to be on the same plane with the trackbar.
i don't think the rear is a big deal, but with the front, its hard for me to imagine setting up the shock hoops without having the lower links burned in.

Title: Re: 3 link front 4 link rear
Post by: SteeevO on July 05, 2011, 01:52:34 AM
you guys are thinking way too far into this. the hoop will need to be above the lower mount. this will vary from truck to truck. before welding anything solid, cycling the suspension and checking for any possible binding is a good idea. in some cases you will have to have the hoop slightly farther back than the lowers to eliminate binding. but its hard to say exactly how to set this up over the internet. because like i said. it varies from truck to truck depending on how exactly youre building the suspension and how youre mounting the shocks.

Title: Re: 3 link front 4 link rear
Post by: roastbeef on July 05, 2011, 08:12:41 AM
its not hard to talk about, its hard to actually do shock mounts without the links on the axle. its already done, so i guess it doesn't matter now.

Title: Re: 3 link front 4 link rear
Post by: penski61 on July 05, 2011, 02:08:33 PM
if they arent right we will re-do them not a huge issue but ill probably be ok

just order springs from summit for the rear 14-250 and picking up the 200's from a guy on DR for $65

all that is left to do on the truck is load it up and head to so-cal in August

the new housing should be in the next couple of weeks , Kenny do you have a way to remove/install bearings on axle shafts?
if not i may have to tear the old axle down then put in the new axle and just half weld in the leaf springs

Title: Re: 3 link front 4 link rear
Post by: theking on July 06, 2011, 02:56:17 AM
I have a 12 ton press and bearing splitter.

So, will the current drag link clear at full stuff?   A 21" frame height at full stuff should work out great and clear the drag link and trackbar no problem.  We won't need to make a bent track bar, too, which is a PITA to make!  How long are the DOM pieces you have?  Also, what all brackets and tabs do you have so far?

Also, are you getting the bump formed housing?  I wonder if we can make Steevos axle bridge work with that?

Title: Re: 3 link front 4 link rear
Post by: penski61 on July 06, 2011, 07:14:25 AM
i forgot to check the draglink for full stuff , right now i have 5-1/4 before the draglink would hit so i could either get the pitman arm from trail gear for the yota box  and grind 3 of the splines so it would fit the steering shaft and lose the 1" spacer , notch and re-enforce the frame or loose the spacer and lower the steering box down

just about everything i have is 40" long except 2 pieces of 2" that are 36"
the brackets and tabs i have are the 2 front lower frame link mount , 2 lower axle link mounts ,shock tabs (4) flat (4) curved , and the panhard axle mount
Steevo said he has the rear upper lower frame mount combo and will get the rear axle lower link mounts

well here is one pic from this weekend , Natalie is cleaning up the other ones
checking clearance and what needs to be changed , everything worked pretty much flawlessly
only changes are charge the coilovers to 200lbs since we only had a pre-set regulator , move the coilovers up about 2" in the back and adjust the rear uppers one hole up

well the rear coilovers were too far inboard which was cause the rear to completely flex when the front was on a 3 ft rock and the front wasnt doing much of anything

Very nice Arron!  That is really the best way to mount the coilovers.  How far out are you moving the axle side mounts out?  I think if you move them out enough, like about 5", that should keep the tires from rubbing at full stuff.  Did you drop down the upper mounts a little?

Title: Re: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear
Post by: penski61 on September 27, 2011, 07:16:20 AM
i havent welded the lower shock tabs on yet but im trying to keep the coilovers at atleast a 75 degree angle no less but i think when i measured last its about 6-7 inches away from the axle flange
i had already moved the lowers up from when we set them and it worked perfect , i also moved the axle foward about 2"
oh ps its Aaron  ;D you just doubled the wrong letter

Title: Re: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear
Post by: theking on September 27, 2011, 09:43:30 AM
Doh!

I would shorten the lower shock tabs back down to keep the same tire to fender clearance.  I calculate you'll loose about 2"  articulation if you outboarded the mounts 5" on each side.

Title: Re: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear
Post by: penski61 on September 27, 2011, 07:03:05 PM
2" up travel or down travel? i have them setup for 5.5 up and 8.5 down  , the lower mounts are pretty much lined up with the front lower mounts if your looking from the back of the truck to the front

i have the same amount of clearance between the fenders front and rear and i just barely touch on the front with 5.5 up 8.5 down

overall the lowers were outboard 7-1/2" from where the were and the uppers about 4"

i got what you meant Kenny

i was able to lower them 1"  but couldnt go any lower than that

all finished up , the work was well worth it the truck handles alot better cornering and it flexes pretty much even front to back now :D

well by the end of next month i should have an atlas :) , so i decided to go ahead and make dual cutting brakes so when i upgrade the front and do front digs i can brake each rear wheel individually for tighter turns ;)
here is the dual levers im making up
(http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z219/penski61/sas/P1222720.jpg)
new center console with cutting brake levers , still need cut the holes for the cupholders then i can probably go ahead and paint this one , ill probably do a 2nd piece for the atlas shifters

started work on the 60 over the weekend since im pretty much done with the cables
welded the plate on using an arc welder (havent used one 14 years lol) and looks like it should seal up ok , then i let it cool in a heavy jacket and sleeping bag

I've never stick welded.  Looks pretty good to me.  Why'd ya go with stick and not Mig.  Nickel rod?

Title: Re: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear
Post by: penski61 on February 06, 2012, 08:20:42 AM
went with stick cause my mig is gas less and only 115v , i was able to make a much larger bead faster with arc vs mig as well

well i went ahead and returned the kingpin knuckles and ill order up new ball joint knuckles and high steer arms , this saved me about $550

got some more done on the housing , drilled and tapped for the arb , got the inner c's welded on with shock mounts and started on the ram mount
should have the ruff stuff diff cover next week

got the atlas put in today , the trans jack slipped out from under the atlas so i ended up catching it on my chest then bench pressing the freaking thing into place which was fun lol

here is the 2nd portion of the center console im working on , i may have to re-do it and drop the portion down where the atlas shifters are so the cables fit but ill find out more tomorrow

Shifter should feel and operate well mounted like that.
how are you keeping the center console to the floor?

Title: Re: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear
Post by: penski61 on February 16, 2012, 07:40:21 PM
well this version didnt work , the shifter cables basically need to run along the floor in order to keep the box level otherwise when i put the box up higher the cables pull the front of the box down
in order to keep the box where i want it ill just lower it and make the console step down cause i didnt really feel like cutting another hole up under the dash , especially next the ecu
ill get some more metal tomorrow or Saturday and I'll have version 2 probably done later Saturday

Title: Re: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear
Post by: theking on February 16, 2012, 11:09:28 PM
I'd just weld it. lol

Hey, that D60 truss looks like it will limit your uptravel quite a bit with the oil pan.  I would see if you can put the upper link bracket on just the driver side tube and not run a truss at all.

Title: Re: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear
Post by: penski61 on February 16, 2012, 11:54:32 PM
it hasn't been that long since you worked on my tuck lol , but the axle is about 3" away from the oil pan and this truss is about the same height as the one you did for the d44 so i dont see having any issues with up travel

Title: Re: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear
Post by: penski61 on February 18, 2012, 05:29:15 PM
had to change the design from above so that the shifter box would mount to the floor instead of the console
here is the shifter box with some mounts i made up to bolt it to the floor
(http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z219/penski61/sas/P2183679.jpg)
and the finished look , except the shifter knobs those are getting replaced

new shift knobs installed
(http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z219/penski61/P2255667.jpg)

got the ruff stuff diff cover modified , kind of hard to tell but there are (2) 1/4" allen head screws on the bottom of the cover 1 in the center and one to the right
i may roll the 44 out from under the truck and get the 60 mocked up so i can get the lower link brackets, pan hard bar and hydro assist brackets on then go ahead and pull it back off and paint it

how did you cut that thick steel for the high steer arm?  I'd use lot's of red locktight or something to keep that arm from loosening up.  I've seen a few KOH rigs with arms fully welded to the knuckle, which I thought was interesting.

Title: Re: Nissan Frontier 3 Link Front & 4 Link Rear & 5:1 Atlas
Post by: penski61 on March 18, 2012, 10:03:03 PM
the arm is keyed as well  but i don't think it will loosen up since i put the studs on first and had to use a hammer to get it down to the knuckle lol

i plan on using red lock tite though and the arm will be tied into the steering knuckle with the drag link and tie rod heims in double sheer with a F911 bolt

the pic from above isn't how i plan on running the steering anymore , it will be like this

got the truck back from Ian over at RPM fab , he did a good job on the main portion of the cage but the rest of the stuff i could finish on my own. I
added a dash bar and windshield bars , grab handles , floor braces to tie in the a-b-c pillars then added the tool box rack and not quite finished with the ice chest stand

1st checked off the list is the flange
thought about using the 14 bolt spindles but if i  break one it has to be pressed off with ruff stuff flange i can just unbolt the spindle

Oh wow that's pretty good I was guessing about 25-30k, with the price of the vehicle. By the time its fully locked my rover will be about 13-15k, including the price of the vehicle

decided to do a manual swap since i was having issues with the auto
also wanted to shorten the wheelbase a little more so decided to do a body swap using a body that was set up for a manual
cut the cab away at the fenders then cut pretty much at the same spot on the donor cab . once i got the seams welded took it to paint
here is what its looking like
