so is this going to be toooo low?  picked up on CL today

the guy said they were 5.13s, but after some quick math they turned out to be 5.38s.

Post by: penski61 on September 20, 2010, 07:06:30 PM
your gonna have to swap out the rear axle if you wanna run 5.38's also what size tires do you wanna run?

Title: Re: and so it begins...
Post by: dvdswan on September 20, 2010, 09:28:06 PM
I'm planning on running 35s.  I was planning on buying a pathy axle with discs, but if I buy something else, I guess I look for a 9", D44 or D60.  I thought they made 5.38s for the H233B.  hmmm, more research I guess.

Post by: penski61 on September 20, 2010, 10:20:58 PM
nope , steevo was gonna try and get some made up but the cost was ridiculous

5.38's are gonna be a bit much for 35's though

Title: Re: and so it begins...
Post by: dvdswan on September 22, 2010, 06:41:24 AM
well, I was wondering how low they were going to be.  5.13s would have brought my ratio back to stock or really close to with the HG46 and 235 that it came with.  but for $50 I couldn't pass it up.

You'll be fine with either ratio. You'll turn about 300 more rpm on the highway @65mph with the 5.38' than with 5.13's

well, work is going slow, that sucks, but still making progress at least.  been cleaning up pieces off the 2nd D44 I picked up.  went to the j/y today to look for a r/s backing plate as the one that was on the axle was driven on the road, about 2" ground off of it.  no luck finding a backing plate but did find a r/s flattop knuckle for $10 off a 74 3/4T chevy.

so its on all 4 wheels again.  so here are the pics...

as you can see in the pictures I need to twist the coilover mount and I am going to set them completely into the frame for more clearance for axle flex.

so, I still need to do the brakes, steering, frt trackbar, decide the best way for the frt upper link (its currently set up like a jeep axle and tied into the lower link), redo the rear trackbar ( I don't like how its done right now) and finish the welding ( everything is just tacked in).  I'm planning on the high steer setup and need to get a pitman arm, threw away my original one when I install the calmini steering.  dumb move.

Ok, its been a while, some may know others not.  the truck is basically done, a few ends to tie up.  I was having trouble completing the job, having issues with geometry I guess.  I had a friend who own's Those Guys in Bremerton to make it work.  so here are some pics.

support tube for the front hoops.  I installed a 90 240SX intake to make room for it.  still some items to tie up here.  best thing is I am able to keep the OBDII.

support tube for the rear towers.

front 3-link and new header, had to install a new exhaust (old one was rusted and manifold was cracked).

Nice. Have you tested it out yet?

Title: Re: and so it begins...

Nice, it looks good.

What size heims did you use?
It's hard to tell by the pics.

Title: Re: and so it begins...
Post by: dvdswan on August 29, 2011, 08:53:57 PM
IIRC, the lowers are 7/8" and the uppers are 3/4".

haven't had the chance to test it out because when it got to this point I had 2 days before I left for overseas until spring.  :hit:  sometimes the job really puts a damper on the fun things in life.  there are still a lot of little things to do.  hook up the e-brakes, install the compressor and airlines for the ARBs, and finish hooking up the vacuum lines for the intake to name a few.  I figure about 2 weeks of little junk when I get home then I will test it out.  I'm definitely going nuts not being home.

Title: Re: and so it begins...
Post by: SteeevO on August 29, 2011, 09:16:53 PM
Why did you choose 3/4" and 7/8" heims? Those are quite a bit smaller than the 2.5" johnny joints that many people use including myself.

Title: Re: and so it begins...
Post by: dvdswan on August 30, 2011, 05:32:00 AM
I think we are talking 2 different terms (hopefully).  I'm talking thread size and I think you're talking joint size (outside diameter of the whole joint), if so IIRC they are around 2-2 1/4".  Patrick (owner of Those Guys) uses these on his and his wife's rock crawlers, so I trust his judgement with these for street and offroad use.

Title: Re: and so it begins...
Post by: SteeevO on August 30, 2011, 09:45:29 AM
yes, the johnny joints are the measured on the outside diameter and have a mounting width of 2-5/8" I believe.
Sounds like they are a little smaller but I'm sure it'll be fine.
