building a trailer to haul my buggy. all the off the shelf trailers are too big to fit on the side of the house and too heavy to pull with my hardbody. chassis framed up. 76" wide, 135" long, 31" tongue. chassis is 300 pounds so far. 800 pounds est curb weight.

Well, you save money on the reg by registering it for the first time in Maine by mail. That state allows it for non-residents, that's why a lot of the trucking companies do it. I think it's like $12. Then later you can just transfer it to CA plates. They can also issue a title for an extra fee. Came across this little tidbit when researching story ideas for the magazine.
Registering in CA for the first time means they have to check it out + pay tax on the amount of materials on top of everything else.

took it to the DMV in Riverside. told them I built it from parts on craigslist for $500, they said OK no problem. plate and VIN were $20 and the optional title was $18. They didn't even really inspect the trailer at all. They just asked how much it weighed and what it was for (vehicle carrier). I didn't think it would be that easy! best part it fits in the garage with the buggy on it!
